- 1 cup hot reduced fat milk
- 1 egg yolk
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ tablespoons sugar
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 ½ tablespoons butter
- Black food coloring
- Red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon salt
- In a small bowl, whisk together hot milk and egg yolk. Set aside.
- In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, sugar, and yeast; whisk to mix.
- Add the warm milk mixture along with butter and salt to the dry ingredients; stir until combined.
- Knead the dough by hand for about 10 minutes or use a stand mixer for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Divide the dough into two or three portions. Color one portion black and another red, kneading thoroughly.
- Allow the colored dough to rise in a warm area until doubled in size (about 1.5 hours).
- Punch down each piece of dough and roll them out into rectangles; stack them in your desired color order.
- Roll tightly into a loaf shape and place in a greased loaf pan.
- Let rise again until doubled (about another hour), then preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for approximately 30 minutes until hollow when tapped. Cool completely before slicing.
