  • 1 cup hot reduced fat milk
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tablespoons sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ tablespoons butter
  • Black food coloring
  • Red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together hot milk and egg yolk. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, sugar, and yeast; whisk to mix.
  3. Add the warm milk mixture along with butter and salt to the dry ingredients; stir until combined.
  4. Knead the dough by hand for about 10 minutes or use a stand mixer for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Divide the dough into two or three portions. Color one portion black and another red, kneading thoroughly.
  6. Allow the colored dough to rise in a warm area until doubled in size (about 1.5 hours).
  7. Punch down each piece of dough and roll them out into rectangles; stack them in your desired color order.
  8. Roll tightly into a loaf shape and place in a greased loaf pan.
  9. Let rise again until doubled (about another hour), then preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake for approximately 30 minutes until hollow when tapped. Cool completely before slicing.
